Backstage On The Phantom of the Opera
The musical Phantom of the Opera is the brainchild of none other than one of the most commercially successful music writers of all time — Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Sir Lloyd Webber based his musical on the novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera, but it’s French title was: Le Fantôme de l’Opéra.
Sir Lloyd Webber opened the Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End in 1986. It is a story of a genius, but disfigured, musician who haunts the Paris Opera House. The haunting by the Opera Ghost keeps the new owners of the opera house on their toes as the Phantom leaves “notes” all around the opera house on how it should be run and managed. The Phantom has fallen for a young chorus girl, and he has been tutoring her how to sing.
Sir Lloyd Webber wrote the part of Christine Daaé, the chorus girl and central character, for his wife of the time, Sarah Brightman, who starred in the role both in London and on Broadway.
In January of 2006, Phantom of the Opera became the longest running musical in Broadway history, and it was only fitting that the musical that Phantom beat was another Lloyd Webber smash hit, Cats!
The Phantom of the Opera is a musical that is still running in theaters around the world today! From Broadway to London, Las Vegas, in several countries around the globe at any given time.
